Subject: [Mumbai] Update - H1N1 / Swine Flu advisory

Dear All,

The H1N1 Virus / Swine Flu is spreading across the country at an alarming speed and has started affecting the unsuspecting population across cities. This virus is highly contagious and has already proven fatal in a few cases. However if symptoms are identified early and appropriate treatment taken in a timely manner, it is totally curable with a few days of medication. It is best that we remain alert and take adequate precautions so as to not contract the infection. We would like you to remain safe and healthy and would request you to meticulously follow the under-noted tips and adhere to the instructions/recommendations.

Know the symptoms

Headache, Running Nose / Stuffy Nose, Sore Throat, Cough, Fever, Joint Pain, fatigue, Vomiting & Diarrhea

Some Additional Information

Cases of Swine Flu may also have similar symptoms of seasonal flu:

Ø  the worst symptoms usually last for about five days, but coughing can last up to two to three weeks

Ø  some very young children, people with some long-term medical conditions, pregnant women, and older people, can get very sick

Ø  in rare instances, severe illness may result in death of the patient

Points to Note

Ø  If you experience any of these symptoms consult your doctor first instead of queuing up in the test centers. You might just have caught a seasonal flu and not swine flu. Incase your physician confirms of symptoms of Swine Flu/ feels the need for you to get tested, immediately report to the test center / hospital mentioned below for the screening test. Please keep your supervisor informed of the developments.

Ø  While at the office premises, if you experience Swine Flu symptoms as confirmed by the doctor, immediately report it to your Supervisor and the designated HR SPOC (mentioned below) who will arrange to have an opinion taken from the Company Doctor and may even get you quarantined. FMG folks would take care to provide you with a mask and may arrange to have you moved out of the office premises immediately so as to prevent further spread of the infection / flu. Anyone accompanying the flu suspect shall also wear a face mask throughout the period of help extended. If the employee is suspected to have symptoms of H1N1 infection by the doctor, on the advice of the Doctor, the employee should approach any of the Govt. appointed hospitals as mentioned below, for further tests and treatment. The flu suspect should not report to office till the complete cycle of medical investigation, observation, screening and tests are completed.

Ø  If the test results are Negative, the employee can return to work with the medical report for official records.

Ø  If the test result is Positive, the employee will have to undergo the treatment plan as per the Health Ministry guidelines and should report to office only after the treatment is completed and the recovery is certified by the medical centre. The employee will have to produce the medical report indicating fitness for resumption of duties. This will be maintained in the official records.

Ø  Project Managers should keep a note of such employees suspected of Swine Flu and ensure necessary project planning as such employees may not be available for work till the observation period is complete with no symptoms being visible or till the medical test cycle is complete (in cases of employees exhibiting symptoms) and all such employees are subsequently tested Negative.

Ø  All employees returning to India from any foreign location are advised to stay at home for 2 days on reaching India. Please contact your respective Manager on return. You might be instructed to work from home if need be.

Safety measures that you should take

1.    Check and adhere to the tips from travel counselor or travel and VISA cell of TechM if you are traveling

2.    Avoid going to public places

  1. Wear a mask when you are in a public place including office. Face masks (recommended mask - N95) are available in pharmacies / hospitals / medical shops all across the country to protect oneself from catching and / or preventing the spread of the virus.
  2. Wash your hands with soap & water especially after sneezing & coughing

5.    Cover your sneeze and cough in disposable tissues

  1. Avoid close contact with people who are unwell
  2. Practice safe food consumption habits

8.    Avoid close contact with wild birds / animals. Stay away from the Zoo.

9.    Dispose off the used masks at a suitable place so that the flu does not spread if the user was infected. It is best to burn the used masks, if unsure of safe disposal method/s.

Please do not panic…sincere efforts are being made by the government to curb the spread of this virus. We all must follow the guidelines being issued from time to time and help containing the further spread of the harmful virus.

Below are a few sites which you may like to visit for more information on the virus. We have also uploaded a document on Swine Flu and a FAQ on the HR intranet which you can browse through.
